Well, um, I believe in things being the right way, so I’ll try to make this orderly. Uh, hi there everyone. My name is Hermione Granger. Oh—that’s pronounced Her-My-Oh-Knee, in case you were having trouble, which most people do. Yeah, believe it or not it took my two best friends the better part of a year to get it right, so I guess I’ve heard every possible way to not say it. Right, so I am twelve years old and I am in Gryffindor house at Hogwarts. My two best friends are Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Well, they’re my only friends, but that still counts, right?
“I’m not a nighttroll! I’m a little girl.”
Also, I—What? No, what, what did you say…? Well, I guess I mean—Okay, okay, yes. Yes, I am not very pretty. But I don’t think looks matter that much, anyway. I mean, sure I look a little frizzy and frumpy and my hair is really puffy and some people think I’m a nighttroll, but why should that matter? I make up for it by being the smartest person I know. It’s strange actually; I mean, I pay attention in class and I can always answer questions, but for some reason teachers don’t like me. I mean, no one really likes me except for Harry and Ron, but you’d think teacher might because I always do my homework. Actually, sometimes I get the idea that I’m the only one who ever studies at Hogwarts, but that’s a ridiculous thought. Just because I do everyone’s homework for them and that’s probably the only reason anyone talks to me doesn’t mean that they aren’t trying in class. I am the only one who ever thinks things through. Harry and Ron are always trying to get into trouble and go on adventures and I always have to stop them. Er…actually I never succeed at stopping them, but I do try and it’s the thought that counts (I think). I guess, overall, what I’m saying is that I am the smartest and only sane person at Hogwarts.

Well, I used to think that being able to write well didn’t matter, but then I found out that I write the best essays anywhere and now I know that it is the most important skill there is. This is a little old, but, don’t worry, if you assign me an essay for class I promise it will be the best thing you’ll ever read. Yeah, um, here goes.
Jessica Smith-Simon didn’t even blink at horror movies. She loved dark mysterious nights, had a slightly morbid interest in everything that most people wouldn’t go near, and liked to think she was fearless. High school, however, she wasn’t so sure about. Between girls who had no life and boys who had vocabularies of just over one hundred words, Jessica had never really liked the concept of a school—or, rather, asylum—where hormonal teenagers who didn’t want to be there and grumpy adults who really didn’t want to be there were locked up together. Yet, somehow, she had survived the experience for the better part of three years. This particular day couldn’t really that much worse, right?
Right?
Sadly, Jessica’s mind had a nasty habit of never glossing over the facts of life, even when she wished it would.
The thing was the night before she had been watching a really interesting show on people who claimed to see ghosts, didn’t realize the time, then had to stay up late (technically early) doing homework. Combined with her usual sleep deprivation, Jessica was feeling especially terrible. However, she would never just lay in bed unless she had broken both her legs, both her arms, and was on mind-numbing pain meds. A day spent doing nothing was a day wasted. Maybe she could browse the web on her laptop during first period. And second…And third…And maybe fifth. Not fourth, though, that teacher was strict.
She gripped her bag tightly and walked down the hallway greeting those she recognized. Opening her locker, Jessica reluctantly began what she knew was doomed to be a terrible day. Here she was, stuck in a madhouse of teen angst so she could “earn a brighter future”. One thing was for sure: any future would be brighter than these four years of tort—high school.
Right?

What? Ten points for what? But that isn’t fair! ...
No, no, you are completely right. Oh yes, absolutely. So there’s no need to expel me.
“Thanks, Hermione”
